Buying a Bernese Puppy should start with the selection of Breeder with a responsible breeding programme.Good breeders will have the best interest of the breed as a priority. In every breed you have a combination of Breeders and Puppy producers. Responsible breeders will have thoroughly researched the background of the dogs used for breeding, and will do everything to ensure they produce the healthiest puppies possible.
Puppy producers have no long-term concern for the welfare of the puppies produced.Beware of the producer who uses inferior breeding stock just to produce a litter, without any consideration for the future wellbeing of the breed or any problems that may arise. They rarely offer a rehoming or rescue service, always taking the easy option, preferring Quantity to Quality and motivated by financial gain.Recognised responsible breeders rarely if ever advertise ,Puppy producers always advertise usually using the fact that one of the parents is a show winner but not highlighting the suitability of the parents to one another. If possible you should attend some Dog shows and speak to exhibitors and seek information .When you have selected a breeder that you can trust, ask him to place you on his waiting list, communicate clearly to him your requirements and circumstances.
Each puppy is an individual with its own physical and temperamental traits.Responsible and skilled breeders spend a lot of time watching and evaluating their puppies as they develope, and mentally matching them to prospective homes. This results in the breeder matching specific characteristics of a puppy with the desires and lifestyle of the family.Ideally you should visit the breeder regularly before aquiring your puppy so that both you and the breeder can clearly understand and discuss all aspects of your puppys future. Be prepared for the breeder or a Bernese Club member to visit you to ascertain your suitability,i,e, your lifestyle and living circumstances
and perhaps request references.Do not be surprised if you are required to fill out a Questionaire .A responsible Breeder will recommend some very good books on the breed for you to read ,and web-sites to visit to prepare you for puppy ownership. This enables you to take on the responsibility of ownership, with confidence.
Your Puppy should be collected at 7/8 weeks of age,it should have a Vet. health Cert.Puppy contract, Worming History, First vaccinations, Micro-chip ,Registration papers Pedigree details ( Hip and Elbow reports and show details if available, also age and cause of death of its ancestors )You should also recieve details on feeding and training your puppy, together with some puppy food. Now the joy of bonding and learning with your puppy begins, and your life will never be the same again.
