The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large friendly dog originally coming from Switzerland. Bernese Mountain Dogs are a striking tri-coloured large dog. Their build is sturdy, usually with a compact body and broad chest. Their coats are heavy, medium length, sometimes wavy and so these dogs are not suited to very warm climates. They are known for their sweet character and gentle nature. Sometimes they are referred to as " Velcro Dogs "to reflect their personality as a devoted companion. They are loyal dogs and make excellent companions for both young and old. Bernese are highly intelligent and sensitive, they are willing to please and respond to the gentlest of training methods. The Bernese Mountain Dog enjoys being around people, they thrive on contact and so should not be left alone for long periods at a time.
Longevity
This varies with type of breeding and ranges between five and twelve years,seven to eight years is usually the average. Cancer has been a leading cause of death in middle aged Bernese. Joint and bone problems occur in a minority and elbows and hips should be x-rayed and scored to provide a guide to whether or not problems should be expected and also to help provide information for improving the standard of the breed. Cruciate Ligament weaknesses are a problem in some bloodlines so always thoroughly check the ancestry.
Bernese are being used in many Countries as Therapy and Companion Dogs. Their Calm nature and high intelligence is a great asset to trainers. They have been used successfully to help people overcome their fear of dogs and have helped to give confidence to Children under stress.
